Hi guys, I am looking for work in Devops at the moment. I got certified as a CKA in July. I have 20 years of experience in IT. Started in help desk, did system admin, got a job as an IT Manager, did a job as an environment manager looking after 10 engineers, then worked in my own start up which was in Advertising/design (where I managed the IT/finance) managed to get to 10 employees but a divorce with my ex closed it down. I feel I can configure pretty much anything. With time and google. I was certified in Microsoft in the early 2000s = you know roles, networking, active directory, DNS, DHCP, routing, firewalls, security etc etc. I have configured routers, firewalls, vpn access, web servers, phone systems, file servers, email servers, data bases, server hardware, moved stuff to VMs, scripted this and that. I read Devops job descriptions that seem like they expect you to be a god at everything. I have spoken to 20 recruiters in the last month that once they ask me if I have experience in one technology, eg Azure, And I say no, but I have used AWS and GCP, they immediately say ok we will review our applicants and get back to you. (never to hear from them again). A few weeks ago I thought I landed a job writing Kubernetes yaml files and docker files which would have been perfect. However they have yet to send through the contract and the recruiter is now very slow at getting back to me. The job descriptions seem like they want you to build a house, vs just coming in to do maintenance. How much of your jobs are you actually building CI/CD pipelines vs just maintaining existing stuff? Are there roles out there were you mainly work on Kubernetes, supporting the production systems and environments for development, staging etc? I feel like all my work experience is worth nothing at the moment. I can’t even get an interview with the technical staff as the recruiters/HR people are doing paint by numbers with a long list of skills that hardly anyone would be experts in each of the areas. submitted by /u/randyjizz [link] [comments]
